Character limits in 2026
- Instagram — 2,200 characters of caption; about 125 characters show before “more”. Since December 2025, at most 5 hashtags.
- Facebook — the post limit is over 63,000 characters, but posts of up to about 900 characters read best.
- LinkedIn — 3,000 characters; about 210 characters show before “see more” on a computer.
- X (Twitter) — 280 characters on an account without Premium.
- Threads — 500 characters.
- TikTok — we assume a safe 2,200 characters for a video caption (sources give 2,200 or 4,000).
How we count
We count characters the way a person sees them — emoji made of several codes (e.g. with a skin tone) count as one character. A hashtag is a word starting with “#”. Platforms may count some emoji as two characters — so leave yourself a small margin.
The counter runs in your browser: the text is not sent to our server.
The first sentence matters most
On every platform only the beginning of a post is visible. Make sure the first sentence says what it’s about — and put the details and hashtags further down.

Yes, hashtags and spaces count towards a post’s character limit. Instagram also has a separate limit of 5 hashtags.
